Fluency and Reading Comprehension go hand in hand when looking at a child’s overall reading ability. As a resource teacher, you need to continuously monitor the students’ overall progress in reading. Truthfully, you need to monitor progress in all core areas such as: Reading, Writing, and Math. But this post is about Reading and using reading comprehension tests!

Why do we need reading comprehension tests?
If you are a Resource Specialist or Special Education teacher you probably already know, there really isn’t just one type of assessment you can use for all your students. You have to have every assessment leveled. Also, you need to find the level the student is at. Then you must, help them increase their abilities at their own rate. As I mentioned in an earlier post, when I began teaching I did not have many resources to start with. Seems like if I started the year with only one thing, I would definitely need BASELINE DATA.
Leveled Reading Comprehension & Fluency Assessments
One of the products in my Special Education Assessments BUNDLE is a series of reading comprehension tests with answers and fluency assessments. These are quick reading comprehension tests with answers for grades K-3 and grades 4-8 because no resource teacher has ample time to spend on assessing or scoring assessments. Almost all of the assessments have reading passages that are between 50-300 words. Because there are different word count for each grade, at the end of each paragraph on the passages you will find a number that indicates the word count at that point.

What about the FULL versions of the reading comprehension tests?
In the FULL/PAID versions there are several pages of Reading Comprehension Questions aligned with Common Core Standards for each passage. The reading passages were leveled according to Fry’s Readability Formula for accuracy and consistency.
Because no product is complete without one, I included an Answer Key. (That would be a pain, if an answer key was not provided). Also included are teacher data recording/progress-monitoring/tracking sheets, sample IEP goals for each grade, and the directions on how to implement.
There are enough assessments to use for annual, semester, trimester, or quarterly progress monitoring in Reading Comprehension & Fluency.
What Can I Assess with These?
*Common Core Reading Standards for Literature
*Comprehension Skills
